The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is the easiest and the most popular way for international doctors to get into the British Healthcare System.
RMO work offers opportunities to travel, spend time with your family, study for your medical exams or work on a research during your 2 weeks off, whilst earning an excellent salary.
Job Description:
The RMO is one of the most important staff members within the Independent Healthcare Sector.
RMOs work with elective surgical patients and their main responsibility is to cover the ward, conducting regular ward rounds and ensuring all patients are well looked after. Any changes or concerns in a patient's condition are reported to the consultant and their instructions are followed in respect of further treatment.
Although most of the RMOs have no contact with ITU or emergency units, RMO is expected to lead the resuscitation team in the very rare event of cardiac arrest for which ALS/EPLS courses will be arranged, if candidates don't already have the certificates.
Job Requirements:
- at least 2 years of postgraduate hospital experience ;
- eligibility for GMC registration (free consultancy in obtaining this registration);
- a very good level of English, both spoken and written;
- competent in basic medical skills: blood taking, cannulation, ECG’s interpretation, urethral catheterisation, insertion of naso-gastric tubes and medicines prescription.
The contracts are signed for a fixed term of either 6, 9 or 12 months and the most common rotation is 2 weeks ON – 2 weeks OFF although other rotations (1:1, 1:3) are accepted as well.
Advantages of the RMO work:
- Working schedule adapted to your professional and personal needs; various rotations so that, if you want, you can keep your job in the home country;
- Attractive salaries without having to work the entire month;
- No IELTS needed for the GMC registration.
- Meals and accommodation are provided free of charge for the RMO whilst on duty and the on-call room will usually have satellite TV and Internet access.
