The UNIX System Administrator is a key technical resource in the design, architecture and deployment of new systems to keep the UNIX server environment stable and interruptions to a minimum in standalone and multi-tiered environments.
- In a UNIX server environment, performs installation, customization and maintenance of the operating system and system software products in support of business processing requirements.
- Performs system software installations, system software maintenance and product upgrades.
- Evaluate and integrate new operating system versions, drivers and hardware.
- Tests software updates and patches.
- Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels in standalone and multi-tiered environments.
- Conducts system analysis, configuration management and develops improvements for system software performance, availability and reliability.
- Perform Incident resolution, Problem Determination and Root Cause Analysis in accordance with Service Level Agreements.
- Designs, develops, recommends and implements new or revised system software, utilities and automated processes as necessary.
- Provides in-depth diagnosis for operating systems software/hardware failures and develops solutions.
- Ensures server data integrity by evaluating, implementing and managing appropriate software and hardware solutions.
- Prescribes system backup / disaster recovery procedures and directs recovery operations in the event of destruction of all or part of the operating system or other system components.
- Implements appropriate levels of system security.
- Provides technical expertise for system Transitions, Migrations and Consolidations.
- Provides technical assistance to IT support staff, including but not limited to, DBAs, Network Engineers, Application Developers, Middleware Engineers, other System Administrators, Project Managers, Change Managers and Business Development staff.
- Conduct, with limited support and direction, system analysis and development to keep systems current with changing technologies and work with other professional technical staff in evaluating current systems and making decisions on future development.
- Provides advice, training, and 24x7 technical support to customers, users and programmers and acts as a technical resource / mentor for UNIX Analysts and Technicians.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience with UNIX operating systems, but primarily with SUN and Red Hat Experience secondary
- Experience with HP – UX or AIX operating systems is an advantage.
- Required knowledge: SUN: Solaris 8,9 and 10 with SUN Enterprise servers; SDS and SVM; Veritas NetBackup; DNS; scripting; SAN, NFS, FTP; Jumpstart;
- One or more of the following skills are an advantage:
- Red Hat: RHEL 4 and 5;
- General knowledge of: Oracle RAC cluster, EMC SAN connectivity, native Linux multi-pathing (nice to have), heavy scripting, Linux DR specifically using Mondo Recovery
- Proficient in Business English
- Comprehensive troubleshooting skills
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
- Significant project management experience and leadership skills
- Experience in developing and maintaining effective relationships with customers/vendors.
- Ability to perform work independently, with little or no supervision
- Energetic and self motivated
